The title of the episode appears to have a different notion of what this episode is about. Without reading the brief description, it is assumed that the Secret Service intends to investigate the hospital after discovering something about Loid.It is also presumed that Loid has to decipher a code that criminals or terrorists send, but no. It is about the homework assignment Henderson gives to the class. The students have to interview a person in the field they are interested in. Anya now has the chance to investigate Loid’s occupation and workplace, where one thing leads to another.
The dramatic irony of the casual connection between Anya’s investigation of Loid’s workplace and the discussion of the staff members creates the funniest moment of the episode. The hospital staff members are discussing supernatural and scientific understanding. Through their dialogue, some do not believe in the supernatural since their belief is dominated by scientific knowledge. They argue that patients who talk about ghosts suffer nothing more than a disorder or damage to the brain. Others want to discuss how to treat patients who talk about ghosts.
One guy refuses to believe it and wants to end the meeting until a given circumstance changes his attitude. Anya, who is in a secret small passage she discovered in Loid’s consolation room, hits the pipe by accident. He and the hospital staff hear something, and they begin to believe that there may be ghosts, but not him. He believes it’s all in his head until he hears the sound of a child running on top of the ceiling, which gives him a chill. He now rethinks the discussion. He begins to believe that it may be a ghost’s voice when there is actually no ghost in the room. It is Anya’s voice, who is struggling to get her leg out from under the pipe.
The rest of the episode has less humor. An example is the unexpected outcome of Anya’s presentation. Yor describes to Anya how Loid works with his patients, as she remembers what Loid told her in Episode 2 about the new method of treating his patients. She should have known that he lies that the bad guys who were chasing and attacking him were not his patients. However, she believes that it is his new method, which seems unrealistic for someone in her profession to believe something like that.
It is also unrealistic that Anya would put Yor’s description of Loid’s treatment of his patients in her presentation. If she cannot read people’s minds, it is understandable that she would listen to what Yor says. However, she has the ability to read what people are thinking. She uses her telepathic skills all the time. Why not this time when Loid’s voice sounds like he is telling her that she gets it all wrong about how he treats his patients?
The decipher code scenes are a setup for the next episode since no one really knows what the secret code is or what Loid’s new mission is. The scene just gives out the time and place. Also, the numerous copies with Anya’s secret code contain the same letters and numbers that Loid receives from his mission, which seems odd or unusual. Then again, this is a comedy anime.
Episode 20 is good. Nothing groundbreaking, but it has a sense of humor in some scenes. The dialogue and thoughts reveal where the character stands in a given situation or discussion. The end of the episode leaves an unanswered question: the secret code that Anya makes, and the code that Loid has to decipher.
