Kaina of the Great Snow Sea Season 1 Episode 8 Review

In this episode, Kaina, Yaona, and Ririha escape Valgahia with the help of Noze. He lends them his boat so they can go back to Atland in hopes of finding the giant spire tree. Even though he said in the last episode that it was just a myth, he still holds on to that hope, especially in a desperate hour. Kaina, Yaona, and Ririha get on the boat, ready to head back home. On the way, they lost sight of the direction as the boat drifted. Will they find their way back and search for what they promised Noze and his family?

The opening starts off slowly. There is little to no tension or suspense about how they can get out of Valgahia safely or their journey back to Atland. They just escape the fortress nation on Noze’s boat without any risk. This goes the same when they are at the Snow Sea. The conversations among them reveal their fear of being chased by the Valgahia soldiers, but no one is chasing them, nor are there any creatures attacking them. Even though a creature is headed their way, as shown by its tail and sound, nothing happens. Yaona is falling into the sea, and the music in the background does not make it feel like they are in harm’s way.

The dialogue between Ririha and Kaina about finding evidence to prove the myth of the giant spire tree is interesting. It shows that Ririha has another goal now that she sees the inhabitant’s way of life in Valghia, as also shown in the last episode. She wants to stop the crisis that people in Valgahia, Canopy, and Atland are experiencing. Also, she wants to avoid war between the two countries. In order to achieve her new objective, she needs to prove the orbital spire tree is real. Kaina suddenly remembers what he saw in Episode 5, which may be evidence of the existence of the tree. However, will that be enough to create peace, as Ririha thinks? Orinoga doubts that, as shown in his dialogue earlier when Ririha tried to pursue the king and queen about the tree.

Overall, this episode is neither good or bad. The impact of the opening is minimal due to little to no intensity or emotion. The escape journey has no risk or challenge, despite the conversation among Yaona, Kaina, and Ririha. Showing Ririha and Kaina in the same traditional steam room is not expected. The culture of the period in Atland seems to indicate that the country would have had separate steam rooms for males and females.
