This anime series is based on Japanese manga written by Onigunsou. It is about the relationship between humans and non-humans. The opening captures my attention. It gets right to the point of the main character’s conflict with others. In this case, the Tsukumogami is an inanimate object that receives a soul and can change form after serving a hundred years with its owners. He despises them due to the deaths of his sister and brother, regardless of what his grandfather, Zohie Kunato, tells him. To this extent, his grandfather sent him to live with six Tsukuomogami and one human, Botan Nagatsuki. He hopes that he will change his view of all Tsukumogami, but will he? Episode 2 reveals his beginning journey through the process of change in his behavior toward them.
The beginning and middle of Episode 2 are predictable in terms of how Hyoma reacts once he reaches Nagatsuki’s house. His lack of knowledge about them and his negative past experiences have an impact on how he sees them. He gets into a fight with one of the six Tsukumogami, Nagi. He offends Botan and the rest of the Tsukumogami when he knows nothing about them, or does he? The episode does not say, but it seems he knows less about them than his grandfather does.
Toward the end of the episode, things get somewhat interesting. The short amount of time to learn a new rule gives him a chance to build relationships with the six Tsukumogami. It is an opportunity for him to identify who his enemies and allies are. It is also an opportunity for him to have a fresh perspective on Tsukumogami and discover his true purpose as a Saeonome in the future, as opposed to his current goal.
The question is, will he change his path? So far, the answer is no. The only reason Hyoma stays with the Nagatsuki’s group is because of his grandfather’s ultimatum. In his dialogue and action in Episode 1 and 2, he does not trust them since some Tsukumogami are out there to harm humans for their personal gain. He is just able to tolerant them due of his objective and his grandfather’s requirement of him staying in the Saeonome clan.
Yet he begins to do something differently. He does not jump to conclusions. He rethinks the circumstances through their dialogue and attitudes. In one scene, Hyoma is about to seal the female Tsukumogami, who passes the evaluation but attacks one of the six Tsukumogami. However, he holds back from sealing her, as tears roll down her face and tells him about the rumor she heard. They are being hunted, and she is paranoid about it. Hyoma listens and later lets her go instead of sealing her immediately.
Overall, the first two episodes are good. Nothing groundbreaking. They mainly focus on how Hyoma adapts his new surroundings and learns how to interact the ones living in Nagatsuki’s house. There is not much information about Botan or how she and the six Tsukumogami meet, or how they ends up raising her.
