Spy X Family Season 1 Episode 16 Review

The pre-credit scene and the music in this episode give a spooky view of Yor’s circumstances. She comes home late, and she shuts herself in her room. Anya gets a vision from Bond showing her crying. Loid feels something is wrong when he sees small cuts on her hands and her gloomy, sad expression. Yor’s inner voice reveals her worry and fear of losing the family in the event that she is unable to complete a perplexing task.

The opening then begins with an eerie feeling of a serious action that Yor is ready to commit. A walk in a dark, quiet public area and the blinking of an old vintage street lamp suggest that her actions need to be kept dark. She stops in front of a house with blood on her hands, dropping onto the ground and looking up at the house. Her facial expression shows that she is ready to take action without any hesitation now. The uncanny music, similar to the music in a horror movie or TV show, intensifies the tension and suspense of waiting to see what will happen next.

Yor rings the bell, questioning who will answer the door or why she is going to the house in the first place. What action is she going to take when a person opens the door? For a moment, it feels like the horrifying moment is present even when Camilla opens the door. The close-up shot of her left eye, her serious expression, and her question to Yor suggest that they are on a risky errand. The creative twist in this comedy is not shown until when Camilla scolds her for bringing crushed tomatoes.

Yor has been learning how to cook from Camilla, who is frustrated at teaching her how to cook. She not only continues to mess up her kitchen, but she also breaks her favorite cutting board. Also, Dominic and Camilla are afraid to eat her food because of its purple color. Ony Yuri is not. He gobbles it up in no time and does not fade, much to Camilla and Dominic’s reactions when they take a bite.

As a last option, Camilla asks Yor and Yuri to recall any meals their parents prepared for them in an effort to aid Yor’s cooking. Yor remembers, and this is where the episode introduces a new light in her life. She succeeds in cooking the stew her mother used to make in the past. Thanks to Camilla guiding her, that led her to have confidence in making stew for Anya and Loid.

Episode 16 begins with a spooky feeling but ends with a happy feeling. It keeps the audience guessing and wanting to know what is going on in Yor’s life. She seems to be involved in some dangerous situation in the beginning, only to find that she is not. She just takes culinary art seriously, which creates a twist in the episode that is surprising. The closing is not related to the main focus of the episode. It shifts the focus to Loid helping Franky out on how to ask a girl out on a date.
