Spy X Family Season 1 Episode 2 Review

Episode 2 is not about romance, but it a setup for romance later in the series. Anya has already passed an exam in the episode that follows the post-credit scene from the first episode. For an admission interview at school, Loid is in need of a wife. Anya and Loid would rather have someone else. Franklin is angry, but he manages to get a file of unmarried women from City Hall for him to choose from. This is where a new character named Yor Briar is introduced to continue the story.

At a tailor shop, Yor sneaks up behind Loid without him noticing. He is surprised by that, but he goes ahead to introduce himself and thinks that she is a good fit to be his wife after he recalled from the file Franky gave him. It includes her name and occupation as a clerk only. Her other line of work is hidden from Franky, which does not explain how the information can be hidden from an informant. Yor looks at him as he is the perfect guy to invite him to a party where her co-workers ask her to bring her boyfriend. She introduces herself and plans to invite him until she sees Anya, who returns after a tailor took her measurement.

Yor automatically assumes that he has a wife and feels bad for even thinking of asking him. It is out of her mind and out of the question. She does not want to get involved with a married man or destroy someone’s marriage. Even though her hidden occupation as an assassin makes her seem aloof and uncaring, her inner characteristics may tell a different story. In this situation, she is thoughtful about not hurting Anya and Loid’s marriage.

Anya reads Yor’s thoughts and thinks that she is suitable to be her mother, even though she knows her secret. Her soliloquy shows that she is excited about having a father as a spy and a mother as an assassin. She does not know what kind of danger she will be in, nor does she feel that she is the kind of person who will be hurt by her. She trusts Loid, whom she thinks is a cool papa and would protect her if there was anything wrong. After all, he had decided to rescue her from Edgar and his team in the first episode.

Anya begins to sing a song where it directly says she needs a mama. Loid wonders what she is doing while Yor feels relieved. She can now ask him if he could pretend to be her boyfriend at her co-worker’s party. Her brother, Yuri, is worried about her because she will be alone if he gets promoted to a job. She tells her brother that she has a boyfriend even though she does not have one. She also knows that her brother will ask Dominic, her friend, whether her boyfriend is a good guy or not. Her co-workers suspect her. She is still single and does not have a boyfriend. At her age, it is quite a bit suspicious since the rise in spies in the country and the incident at Berlint City Hall. Individuals have been reporting anything that seems odd.

Her coworkers appear concerned about Yor. They do not want others to make the same mistake of thinking that she is a spy. Then again, their invitation, their gossip, and their haughty voices and actions indicate a different story later in the episode.

Loid agrees to her terms when he also asks her if she could go to an admission interview at school with him as his wife. He wants to fulfill his dying wife’s wish for Anya to enter the best school. His hand gestures suggest that it would be an honor for her to accept his request. Yor agrees before they go their separate ways.

Anya and Loid go shopping at the grocery store. When he is at the checkout, the cashier gives him a coin, which contains another task. He needs to get the stolen art pieces guarded by smugglers. He and Franklin manage to take back the art pieces, but the opponents are after them. Meanwhile, Yor wonders if something happened to him because he is late. She waits for him a little longer, but he never shows up.

At the party, Yor tells Camilla, one of her co-workers, that her boyfriend cannot make it. She also tells Dominic not to tell his brother, but Camilla refuses her request. She is going to tell her brother, but not in a way that she is concerned about Yor. She is interested in being a nosy person instead of being Yor’s true friend.

Loid suddenly shows up out of nowhere. He apologizes for being late and explains that he was working with patients before he introduced himself as a psychiatrist and Yor’s husband instead. He got mixed up with his mission that he was supposed to be her boyfriend and not her husband. Either way, Camilla’s contemptuous voice and actions show that she despises and is jealous of Yor, who did not trash her or hurt her in any way. All she does at work is do her job as well as she can. She does not gossip, backstab, or act like one of them. Yet, Camilla wants to make a mockery of her. She pretends to trip and throws the gratin dish at Yor, who uses her feet to catch the plate before placing it in her hand.

Camilla becomes more angry when her devious plan fails. She plans to use another way to degrade her in order to make her feel better about herself or to feel superior to her. She asks questions about her work experiences that involved giving messages in the hotel room and calls her a nasty name. Yor remembers the scenario as a cover-up for her mission to assassinate someone. Camilla does not know that, nor does her file show that she is an assassin.

Yor plans to explain to Loid the situation, but he interrupts without being rude. Even though he may try to make something up, he does so to avoid any unnecessary exaggeration or to preserve her reputation. Before they leave, he tells everyone at the party about her struggle and why she took the merciless job.

While driving a van, Loid says sorry for telling others that he is her husband. Suddenly, they are under attack. A group tries to kill him. He wonders how they know where he is and figures out that there must be a tracking device in one of the art pieces. Yor does not know what is going on. She asks him who they are, and he has to come up with something. He tells her some of his patients are still in the recovery process, and he is using a method to help them recover, which is a lie. Yet, she believes him, even when they are knocking them out.

The most surprising thing is that Yor asks him an unexpected question when they are on the run. She wonders why they are not married, and Loid suddenly falls to the ground. He does not know how to respond to her, nor does he think about marriage. He just needs to find a wife as part of his mission. This is the same with Yor. She needs a guy to be her husband to avoid suspicion and to stop her brother from worrying about her. She plans to propose to him, hoping that he will accept it. Loid agrees, and they both say the marriage vows with a paper ring during the battle. Note that their marriage vows are effective until their missions are over.

Episode 2 is not as good as the first one, but it still has a sense of humor. The episode mainly focuses on Yor and her meeting with Loid. Her background is not explained in detail, but it is enough to get familiar with her character. Her other line of work, besides being a civil servant, reflects that she is living in two different environments. This is the same with Loid’s character. He is living in two different environments because of his job as an undercover agent and as a father. Anya already had experience of living in a family. She was adopted four times, all with negative results. However, this time is different. She considered Loid to be her papa, despite the fact that he was not her biological father. She seems to know who treats her well and who does not. She also seems to wish for a family that would not abandon her. In this episode, she does not play much of a role in it. However, it plays an important part in getting Yor and Loid together, and their relationship may turn into a courtship.
