The opening of this episode starts off with Loid finding a way to get inside the building where the social gathering is held. He wants to have this opportunity to introduce himself to Donavan face-to-face, but is that possible? Passing through security has become more difficult but not impossible. He just does not want to draw too much attention. Therefore, there is no way to do his job until Donavan meets his younger son in the courtyard, which provides a glimpse of Damian’s relationship with his father as well as the interaction between Donavan and Loid.
Damian is surprised to see his father. He never thought he would come. His brother had already warned him not to get his hopes up, despite the fact that he would leave a message. In Episode 17, Damian does not believe his father cares about him, regardless of what his butler says. In this episode, he believes his father thinks his sibling is more important than he is. After seeing all those people invited to attend the social gathering event, he decides to call his brother to cancel the meeting.
It is only Anya’s funny behavior and speech that change his mind. Instead of canceling the meeting, he and his two friends go to the courtyard to wait for his father. Her speech inspires him not to be afraid to tell his father about his low grade on the language test. Even though he is not sure if he would love him unconditionally, he wants to get it off his chest.
Another interesting thing to see is Donavan’s response to Damian’s speech. He does not show any sign that he is enthusiastic or upset about his accomplishments or failures. He just takes it as it is, or he does not care. It does not say, but his response sparks Damian to do better. It also makes him feel like he is part of Demond’s family.
The opening does not capture my attention. The explanation of Loid finding a way to get into the building is too long. Also, the part that is not clear is when Damian asks his father why he came to see him. Donavan never explains why, except that he suddenly has a change of mind. Is it because Loid’s identity has been discovered and he wants to meet him to see what he is up to? Is it because he wants to spend time with his son because he loves him but does not know how to show it?
Overall, this episode is good. The father and son meeting tells a lot about their relationship. It also implies that their meeting may be the first step in bringing their father-son relationship closer than it was previously. The opening is not as entertaining as toward the end of the episode.
