Spy X Family Season 1 Episode 3 Review

The title of this episode is different from the other episodes so far. Loid is probably a narrator who tells a brief description of a family where everyone has a secret identity hidden beneath the surface. He is the main person in the family who seems to know everyone’s secret identity, even though he pretends he does not know it in previous episodes. His main concern is to pass the admission interview at school in order to move forward in his mission. That is where the difficulty begins and slowly fades away due to an unexpected event.

Yor just moved in with Loid and Anya. She has her own room even though she pretends to be his wife and Anya’s mother. The only time they share the same room is when people come to visit them. Anya shows her around to make her feel comfortable. This is the same when Loid tells her that he cleaned the room and prepared cookies before she arrived. Anya tells her that she helped too, but Loid remembers that she only made a mess. Later, Anya tries to help her unpack the last box that Yor brought. Yor quickly stops her from opening it since it contains assassination weapons. Anya reads her thoughts and scares her off. Yet, she does not seem to give up building a bond with Yor.

After she and Anya failed the interview questions that Loid prepared for them, Loid planned to give up on this mission even though he had never failed a mission. The questions he asked included what they do with their free time, the reason for choosing Eden Academy, the parenting method, and how to pass the exam. As a result of their past experiences, Yor and Anya did not know how to answer these questions. Yor does not know how to pass the exam or parent method. Her answer is involved with people passing away, and the way to win is to strike first. Anya’s answer is involved with watching TV alone since her father tells her to stay at home.

Loid suggests going out to learn about the upper-class family lifestyle. Anya holds hands with Yor, hoping to build a daughter-mother relationship with her. Yor feels warm, holding her hands. It reminds her of the time she held her brother’s hand and broke his two ribs. Anya reads her thoughts and immediately scares her away. Loid asks her what happened, but she does not want to talk about it. She does not want anyone to find out about her ability, like when she describes her family in her drawing at the art museum after going to the opera. She tries to cover up her drawing when Loid comes. He sees it and describes it as a story from the cartoon that she sees. Anya feels relieved.

At the tailoring shop, the restaurant, and the National Party rally, Anya uses her ability to hear people’s thoughts again. At the tailor, Yor prefers the color red or black on her dress to cover blood splatter. At the restaurant, Loid is still frustrated with the admission interview. He makes a mistake by depending on them to pass the interview. From now on, he tells himself that he will come up with answers for them to memorize. At the rally, she wants to go away when she hears a lot of negative voices between Westalis and Ostania. Most of them come from personal experiences, and Anya does not want to hear that. All the negative voices confuses her and makes her sad. All she wants is to be in an environment where she feels safe and loved. She leans toward Loid’s side and tells him that she wants to go. Loid recognizes that the rally is too much for her, and they end up leaving the place.

Walking on the pedestrian bridge, Yor, Anya, and Loid encounter an incident that reveals more about their characters. Looking down on the bridge, they see a thief come up from behind an elderly woman, steal her purse, and run off. Yor immediately slides down the small hill to catch the thief without a second thought that her skills may cause Loid to feel suspicious about her as a clerk. Her focus is to catch the thief, but she ends up losing him. She returns to the elderly woman and tells her that she will catch him and will bring her to the hospital.

Loid tries to track him while holding Anya, but he loses him in the crowd. Anya uses her ability to pinpoint where the thief is. She wants to help out Loid since she looks up to him, in addition to her interest in the Spy War cartoon and knowing what he does. With a helping hand, Loid is able to spot him even though he changes his clothes. His walking pattern identifies him as the robber who earlier stole the elderly woman’s purse. Yor comes just in time to meet Loid and Anya. Loid tells her to look after Anya while he goes after the thief. He jumps down the bridge and catches the robber in no time. Even though he should not use his skills in public like that to jeopardize his main mission, he is willing to bring the robber to justice.

After bringing the elderly woman to the hospital, she thanks them for everything they had done for her. Loid tells himself that he should not take compliments, but it is okay to take them once in a while. Anya reads his mind again to get to know her cool papa and others better in all the episodes so far. Her ability not only enhances her to really get to know the person but to put it to good use. Yor is caught by surprise when Loid thanks her. She did not know what she had done to cause him to thank her. They lock eyes on each other. Anya thinks they are flirting, but they say that they are not. Who knows? The point is that they see something genuine in each other that they have not seen before.

Episode 3 focuses not only on preparing the interview but also focuses on the character’s interaction with one another. From the beginning to the end of the episode, Loid shows how he overcomes his frustration working with Anya and Yor. He finally comes to realize that there is still a chance that things will turn out positively. What the elderly woman said about them as a family gives him hope even though he does not see what she sees in them. This is the same with Yor. She seems to be more relaxed with them after working together to help out the elderly woman. The problem is her other role as an assassin and not as a cyber intelligence specialist, cryptanalyst, or an intelligence officer. It does not fit her personality.
