Tokyo 24th Ward Season 1 Episode 6 Review

Episode 6 continues the story from the end of the last episode. DoRed’s team and Ran escape from the train. SARG is after Ran. Wataru raises suspicions about Ran being involved in a terrorist attack because of his friendship and connection with Kuani. Kunai is a member of DeRed, and he is a close friend of Ran. Koki knows better that Ran was not involved in the terrorist attack. Still, Koki takes a different side of the road, which will change his course as well as Ran’s. Together, their paths will lead to the turning point of the story.

Kunai’s video is an example of what is to come between Ran and Koki. A news reporter broadcast the video that Kunai recorded to be released at a set time. Residents wonder whether he is the bomber. If he is, why is he telling the truth? Ran has faith in Kunai. He had already seen the evidence, which was enough to declare war with the ward officers. Koki feels sad that his friendship with Ran can never be the same again, which is true.

In one scene, Ran remembers what Koki did. After Shuta left his studio, Ran is alone again, telling himself that Koki will betray him as the scene cuts to a flashback of his childhood event with Koki. Ran was stealing apples from a small grocery shop. He saw Asumi, who was looking straight at him. He signaled for her to be quiet. She nodded, and he continued to put enough apples in his schoolbag before he walked away. Koki came up from behind Asumi and saw what Ran was doing. He called out the word “thief” and started to go after him. Ran started to run, but Koki caught him and apples fell out of his schoolbag. An unknown person asks what is going on. In a stern tone of voice, Koki tells the person to call SARG.

Other examples that change their courses and behavior include foreshadowing scenes of Gori Suido influencing the public and Koki. In one scene, Gori Suido makes a public speech announcing that the Hazard Caste prevented the terrorist attack on time. However, it is not efficient at eliminating all crimes and devastation. He then introduces a new system called KANAE without going into detail and asks people to update it on their cellphones for testing. Some people accept the upgrade because of their concern for public safety over privacy. Others refuse to because of Kunai’s warning, telling them that it is dangerous.

In another scene, Gori Suido and his son are on the lower floor of the Central Information Center. Sakiko Tsuzuragawa (Hitomi Nabatame), Koki’s supervisor and a researcher, is there to introduce the KANAE (named after Koki’s mother) system. It is a massive computer used for storing, scanning, and utilizing a large amount of data. In order to operate the system, Gori Suido preserves Asumi’s brain and her body inside the machine. Koki could not believe what he had just seen. How could his father do this? Gori’s explanation is simple. He wants to create a perfect world where the system can eliminate all crimes and devastation. The question is whether the new system can measure up to his standard of creating a perfect world or not.

Gori Suido tells Koki that it is time to make a decision to choose between the leader of the DoRed and the idea of creating a perfect world. Koki looks down and sighs, feeling depressed. The scene then cuts to a childhood picture of Asumi and the RGB with DoRed graffiti in the background. As the scene slowly zooms out, it cuts to the next scene of the SARG team breaking into the DoRed studio. Yamamori shouts out, “Run.”Ran, Lucy, and the others start to run up the stairs. As Ran reaches the top floor, he jumps out the window.

The scene cuts to Wataru watching Ran jump, followed by Koki watching an old building being demolished and Sakiko looking at files in the KANAE system. The use of soliloquy in these scenes reveals their characters’ nature. Wataru feels friendships are momentary, referring to the friendship between Ran and Koki. Ran’s prediction was right about Koki, given the circumstances. Koki seems to be on the same page as his father, as shown in his inner thoughts and how the SARG knows the location of DoRed. Sakiko asks Mr. Kanae to forgive her action. She knows what she is doing is immoral, but it seems that she is also on the same page as Gori.

Episode 6 is a setup for what is going to happen in the next episode. People just update the system for testing. The RGB is breaking up, even though Shuta tries to prevent that from happening. Various factors drive Ran and Koki apart. The episode shows Kuani’s grandma being interrogated by the SARG team without furthering looking into Kunai’s computer, which is kind of odd. The evidence is in his computer, as shown in the last episode. Why is there no further investigation into the crime even though Kunai’s video was broadcast in public?
