Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari Season 1 Episode 10 Review

Taiju Kadomori eliminates Hikikiri. He has no use for him anymore since he turned against him. Hyoma turns down Tsubaki’s offer to join her. He would rather stay with the Nagatsuki family because of his goal and duty to protect Botan. Haori has a meeting with the rest of the family, which turns out differently than I expected. I thought Haori’s meeting was something serious. The pre-credit and opening show how what happens after the fight. So I thought it would be related to the outcome of Taiju Kadomori’s and Hyoma’s action, and it would be a serious episode, but no. Haori’s gathering has nothing to do with their actions after the fight in the last episode. It has everything to do with the celebration of Botan and Hyoma’s progress and something more, which shifts the mood.

Haori assigns each grocery task to each Nagatsuki tsukumogami. Botan and Hyoma, on the other hand, get to stay home to find the missing pot for the Japanese hot pot dishes. She wants them to spend quiet time together to build their romantic relationship since she still behaves in the same manner toward him as a prospective husband. She always thinks Hyoma is a good match for Botan after he passed the potential husband’s evaluation. No wonder she has a list of investigative topics to ask him.

This goes the same with Yu. Her repeated view of Hyoma remains the same as when she first met him in Episode 1. His false accusation of Nagatsuki tsukumogami may have something to do with her not liking him. Then again, she may think no guy is good enough for Botan, as shown in Episode 4. She rejected all the guys the Nagatsuki tsukumogami picked. Now, Yu seems to disapprove of them being alone, like she did at the end of Episode 9. Only this time, it’s even more intense than before. She sees Botan and Hyoma on the floor in the storage room, with her on top of him. Yu asks them what they are doing with her angry tone of voice and eye. Botan and Hyoma look a bit afraid of her and do not know what to do. Well, Yu does. She wraps him up in a sac with her hairpin.

The end of Hikikire’s life is disappointing. I thought someone would save him rather than kill him off so quickly again. After all, he is a Sogenbi, who is supposed to be powerful. Also, I thought there was a moment he would play a significant role even though he is injured, but no. Taiju Kadomori has to finish him off, which makes me wonder if he is the main antagonist in this series. He is the one who is behind the deal between him and the Sogenbi, as shown in the last episode.

Overall, this episode is generally a soothing, lighthearted. It is not serious, even though the pre-credit and opening reveal that something serious will be going on. Harris meeting has changed all that, but that is not all. It shows the repeated pattern of attitude toward the relationship development between Botan and Hyoma.
